Launch of the Probation Institute Drug Treatment Training

The Probation Institute is delighted to launch the e-learning course "Understanding Drug Use and Treatment".

This short promotional video provides a taste of the course.

With an introduction by Dame Carol Black, this course provides detailed information about the range of drugs; how they are used, and their risks; the course looks at four case studies and considers appropriate treatment options in the community or in custody. A resource section is included.

The course has been developed with external funding and the support of an independent Advisory Group. There is information in the introduction about the range of consultation and the sources of expertise, including lived experience, drawn upon to develop the course.

Comments to date include:

"I think the training is excellent. It is consistent with the prison training also.”
Mike Wheatley - Senior Manager, Drug Strategy and Delivery Team

"This e-learning is an excellent resource for practitioners in the criminal justice system, to broaden their understanding of substance misuse and the challenges and barriers faced by substance misusers, along with the practical tools and support that can be provided to overcome them. It is a critical piece of learning for all working in the sector and one which I would encourage all practitioners to undertake to improve their awareness and practice."
Helen Dyson - Director of Justice & Health and Business Development, Nacro

“This is a helpful resource for probation practitioners to inform their work in supporting people on probation with substance misuse issues.  We are currently reviewing and updating the national HMPPs training offer in this area of work, the materials provided by the Probation Institute will be helpful to staff until this is available.”
Kim Thornden Edwards - Deputy Director, Probation Workforce Programme

We trust that the e-learning will fully complement the national training for Probation in due course.

The course is accessible to all on our website, at no charge at: https://www.probation-institute.org/drug-treatment-training

We hope you will find this learning helpful and enjoyable - please let us have any feedback by email to admin@probation-institute.org
