Bill McWilliams Lecture - Probation: A Local and Collaborative Venture
Helen Schofield delivered the Bill McWilliams Lecture on 27th June at the Cambridge Institute for Criminology.
Helen spoke of the need for review of the structure and governance of Probation, post Transforming Rehabilitation and unification and the importance of local relevance, engagement and collaboration.
Helen referred to the new, "near Probation environment" which has developed in the space created when TR was abandoned; reflecting that a market economy had been created and continued. This new environment is interesting and varied, including some projects which have been very positively evaluated. However, it is fragmented, includes many pilots, short term initiatives and voluntary organisations struggling for funding. All need to be in scope of any reviews under the new government.
