Supervising criminalised women in the community in England and Wales

A brief history of (un)changing attitudes

Two PI Fellows have made a timely contribution to current political debates about the treatment of criminalised women. In their new article published online by The Howard Journal of Crime and Justice, Maurice Vanstone and Anne Worrall trace the history of supervising women in the community. They argue that, despite both changing and unchanging attitudes towards women in the criminal justice system, the underlying principles of successful community supervision have been established and acknowledged for decades, though never prioritised or consistently implemented by successive governments.
