Position Paper on Professionalism

The topic of Professionalism is very current and nowhere more so than in Probation and Social Work.

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) regulates social workers and probation officers in Northern Ireland. Social Work England regulates social workers in England. Social Care Wales regulates social workers in Wales.

His Majesty's Prisons and Probation Service has introduced an internal Professional Register as the first step towards independent professional registration of all probation officers and probation services officers in England and Wales. The Probation Institute has worked hard over a number of years to promote the importance of independent professional recognition for Probation; we welcome these first steps, and we are represented on the Professional Register Panel. For us it is essential that the internal register is now implemented in a manner conducive to professional competence, confidence and pride. Continuous Professional Development supporting the registration must be relevant, engaging and rewarding.

Our Position Paper "Professionalism and Probation" sets out perspectives on professionalism.
